“Wild Apricity”: a new artwork.

“Wild Apricity” - 2ft x 4ft woodburned original with acrylic accents.

This is the largest and most recently completed piece of the Fractal Wilds Collection I’ve been working on this month. Like most woodburned pieces, photos never do the texture of an artwork like this justice but I absolutely love how this one turned out.

I named this piece “Wild Apricity”, after seeing the word apricity defined as “the warmth of the sun in winter.”

I had never heard this word before and once I did, I immediately thought about this piece and how perfect it fit with this particular mountain-scape.

When designing this artwork, I wanted to create something that reflected the feelings that tend to come up this time of year. The holidays have passed, the spring is still quite a ways away, and we’re sitting patiently waiting within this space of seasonal in-between.

Here in Montana, this time of year can get really hard for many. The days can get dark and deeply cold, and although there are plenty of warmer days that work their way through the season it’s always fluctuating. When the sun comes out and lights up the surrounding ridgelines, there’s a fresh breath the landscape takes that I deeply resonate with.

When I’m hiking, skiing or walking the dogs, there’s a small renewal that happens when the sunlight hits my face in the wintertime. I become brighter, more grounded and tend to feel a small bit of peace make it’s way through my cells.

The bright winter colors and darker shaded details burned into the wood on this piece reflect the same feeling of warm sunlight hitting my skin on a cold winter’s day. The perfect February apricity.

Just like the deep winter sunlight renews me and makes my soul feel a little bit brighter, this piece reflects that winter brightness back to me and continues to remind me that whenever the days feel extra long, cold, and even a little low, there’s always moments of brightness to be found along the ridgelines of wild places.

“Wild Apricity” is a 2ft x 4ft original woodburned piece with acrylic accents on a maple wood panel, and will be available February 28th along with the rest of the Fractal Wilds Collection.
