Fractal Wilds, a new collection for the pieces of us we find in the mountains.

“Fractal Wilds” - 3 separate 12”x12” Spruce panels, entire piece is woodburned, with colored accents painted with acrylic.

This piece is one of my favorites to date. I made it for an art installation that ended up falling through at the beginning of the new year. After hanging it up in my house to watch it change moods with the morning light coming in through the window, I realized that I didn’t want to put it up on my website to sell right away.

Instead, I wanted to create a collection around it.

This 3 part original is a mountainscape woodburned across 3 separate 12”x12” wood panels. The texture jumps off the piece in a way that only a woodburned piece can, your eye can literally follow the subtle dips and textured patterns across the entire piece just like you would taking in a natural ridge line. I think the familiarity found within the shadows and depth of this piece is one of the reasons I find it so special and unique.

Finishing off the trees of the third panel of “Fractal Wilds”, I often wood burn on my lap so I can move the piece easily and get a really good view of how the light is hitting the texture of the piece.

The colored shards represent the pieces of ourselves that we often find along the ridge lines outside in the natural world. Some are still colored, patiently waiting for the right soul to take their little piece of self discovery back home with them. Others are bare, a fractal of natural woodgrain left behind as a reminder that pieces of ourselves have always been here, and these pieces will always be waiting for those who wish to find them.

Growing up in the wilds of Montana + spending most of my career connecting kids and families to the land that weaves in and out of the wilderness, I’ve never met a ridgeline that didn’t reflect a piece of myself back to me.

I wanted to cascade this mountain scene across 3 panels to show the scope and magnitude of a mountain’s ecosystem and the imprint it can leave on those who find a way to connect to it. With this scope, magnitude, and imprint in mind I’ll be creating a series of original woodburned pieces that reflect this idea. The pieces will be in various sizes, working together to create one cohesive platform of self reflection and connection.

I’ve never seen it as my job to tell anyone who they are, what they’re missing and where they need to go. I believe that art is a mirror, it’s content and color palette has the ability to move an individual in a unique and powerful way that no one else can feel. My hope and intent in this collection is to create a safe platform, offering the opportunity of an onlooker to see and connect back to themselves in some small way. Not all of us have had the pleasure of gazing upon a wild landscape, my hope is that these pieces and platforms of self discovery will bring a piece of that wild place into someone’s home.

This piece is called “Fractal Wilds” and will be available to own along with the rest of the “Fractal Wilds Collection” beginning February 28th.
